School information

Our current school building on Margam Street was opened December 1986, replacing the former Cymer Afan School that was situated in the centre of Cymmer and is now the site of The Afan Valley Swimming pool.

Cymer is set in the picturesque Afan Valley.  The school is situated on the outskirts of the village.  It has extensive grounds of lawn; abundant trees, a pond and a nature area as well as a multiple use Sports Hall alongside an All Weather Playing Surface.  The school received grant funding to develop a Community Heritage Garden to promote the local heritage of the Upper Afan Valley and to create a meeting point for the local community.  The grant also allowed the school to develop ‘raised beds’ for the pupils to grow fruit and vegetables.

School Organisation:

Children are admitted to the nursery class the term after their third birthday if there is a place available. Admission forms will be provided by the school office but must be returned to the Local Education Authority at Neath-Port Talbot County Borough Council.

When pupils reach the academic year in which they are 5 years old they become full-time reception pupils.

A third of a pint of milk per day is provided free for pupils until they reach the end of the Foundation Phase.

Pupils are organised into classes of mixed ability and mixed year groups. The age range in each class is shown below.
